Bruxism and TMD
Botulinum toxin type A treatment is a non-surgical procedure for the relief of bruxism (teeth grinding) and other temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Botulinum toxin is injected into the chewing muscles to temporarily reduce their excessive activity. This leads to muscle relaxation, a reduction in pain, and improved jaw function without the need for surgery.
Why Botulinum Toxin Type A?
Bruxism and temporomandibular dysfunction can cause significant discomfort, including jaw and facial pain, headaches, tooth wear, migraines, and sleep disturbances. Botulinum toxin type A works by reducing excessive muscle activity, thus relieving symptoms. The treatment offers a quick, effective, and minimally invasive solution for individuals suffering from these conditions who desire to improve their quality of life.

The treatment
Botulinum toxin type A treatment for bruxism and TMD is performed on an outpatient basis and typically takes only 15 to 30 minutes. First, the area to be treated is cleaned, and a local anesthetic can optionally be applied for comfort. The doctor then precisely injects the botulinum toxin into the affected masticatory muscles. At InGold Aesthetics clinics, we only use botulinum toxins approved in Switzerland, such as Botox®, Dysport®/Azzalure®, Xeomin®/Bocouture®, and the vegan Alluzience®, to ensure maximum safety and effectiveness.

Questions & Answers
How quickly can I expect improvements in bruxism after botulinum toxin treatment?
Most patients notice an improvement in symptoms within a few days to weeks. The full effect often occurs after two to four weeks.
How long does the effect of botulinum toxin treatment for bruxism last?
The effect typically lasts 3 to 6 months. For long-term results, regular top-up treatments are required to continue controlling muscle activity.

In cases where conservative measures such as dental braces or physiotherapy have proven unsuccessful, a request for reimbursement can be submitted to your health insurance provider. Our specialists will advise you individually on this matter.
Will botulinum toxin treatment affect my ability to chew or speak?
Treatment aims to reduce excessive muscle activity without impairing normal functions such as chewing or speaking. However, in rare cases, mild weakness in the chewing muscles may occur, which subsides after a few days.
Can botulinum toxin treatment completely stop teeth grinding?
Botulinum toxin can significantly reduce teeth grinding and relieve symptoms, but it is important to repeat the treatment regularly to achieve long-term results.
